See the gaps before you book.

For each item above, select Yes if the provider has confirmed it is included and No if it is excluded. Your summary below separates gaps in core internal vacate cleaning from items that are property or package dependent.

0confirmed included
0confirmed gaps
0still to confirm

How to read this: a “gap” does not automatically mean the quote is unsuitable. Core internal gaps are worth clarifying because they sit within a comprehensive vacate-cleaning scope. Property-dependent items can legitimately vary with the property, access and package. Use the result to ask better questions and compare like with like.

Something still looks wrong after reasonable cleaning? Do not keep escalating products or abrasion indefinitely. Use the Cleaning Issue or Property Condition tool to work through whether further cleaning may help or whether the remaining issue should be documented.
What this checklist is for

The final clean is its own job.

A vacate clean is easiest to assess once belongings are removed and the property can be worked through methodically. This guide focuses on surfaces, fixtures, fittings, cabinetry, glass and floors — not packing, utility transfers, bond claims or the wider moving timeline.

Work top to bottom.

Dust, vents and higher surfaces first; floors last. Re-cleaning a floor because debris fell onto it wastes time.

Work inside to outside.

Open cupboards, drawers and wardrobes as you go. Empty interiors are easy to miss when attention stays on visible surfaces.

Finish by inspecting.

Cleaning and checking are different passes. Once the work is complete, walk back through without cleaning as you go and look for misses.

Room-by-room vacate scope

What to actually clean before handover.

Individual properties and tenancy circumstances vary. Use this as a comprehensive cleaning framework and check any property-specific instructions separately.

Kitchen

Benches, splashback, sink and tapware; stovetop; oven interior, racks and glass; rangehood; cabinetry and drawers inside/out; pantry shelving; appliance cavities; switches, skirtings and floors.

Bathrooms & toilets

Shower glass, tiles and accessible residue; bath; basins; vanity and cabinetry; mirrors; tapware; toilets; exhausts; accessible vents; skirtings and floors.

Bedrooms & living

Built-ins and shelves; wardrobes; skirtings; accessible ledges; switches; doors and handles; visible marks within cleaning scope; blinds/fans where applicable; floors and carpet.

Laundry & storage

Sink and tapware; cabinetry; shelving; appliance cavities; cupboards; internal storage areas; doors, handles, skirtings and floors.

Windows & tracks

Clean internal glass, sills and accessible tracks, checking corners and channel edges where loose debris and grime collect. Exterior windows are worth checking separately: they are commonly raised as part of vacate presentation but are often excluded from base cleaning packages, charged separately or limited to ground-level / safely accessible glass.

Garage / balcony

Where relevant, remove loose debris and rubbish and address the booked or agreed cleaning scope. Heavy exterior restoration, pressure washing or specialist work may sit outside a standard vacate clean.

Professional finish check

Before you call it finished, stop cleaning and inspect.

The final walkthrough catches a different class of miss because you are no longer focused on the task in your hands.

Look downFloor edges, corners, behind doors, hair, crumbs, mop marks and debris collected against skirtings.
Look upCobwebs, exhausts, vents, fan blades, ledges and dust sitting above normal eye level.
Open thingsCupboards, drawers, wardrobes, pantry shelves and internal storage that can look finished while still holding residue.
Change the lightUse natural or side light to reveal streaks, fingerprints and residue on mirrors, shower glass and glossy surfaces.
Stand at the doorwayTake in the whole room. Obvious visual misses often appear when you stop looking at individual cleaning tasks.
Cleaning vs property condition

Not everything that remains is removable dirt.

A useful vacate checklist should tell you when to stop as well as what to clean. Permanent staining, deterioration, damaged finishes, failed silicone, deep mould issues and wear can remain visible even after reasonable cleaning.

Shower glass still cloudy?

Accessible soap and mineral residue may respond to cleaning, but etched or permanently affected glass can remain cloudy. Avoid aggressive abrasion simply because the surface is not visually new.

Mould keeps returning?

Visible accessible mould may be cleaned, but moisture, leaks, ventilation problems, failed silicone and deeper contamination are not solved by repeatedly wiping the surface.

Carpet marks remain?

Steam cleaning can improve removable soil and some staining, but permanent discolouration, fibre damage, wear and pre-existing marks may remain.

Old surfaces still look old?

Cleaning removes soil; it does not restore worn coatings, chipped laminate, damaged grout, paint failure, corrosion or decades of material deterioration.

Understanding cleaning scope

Compare what is being cleaned — not just the words “vacate clean”.

There is no useful one-line definition that covers every property. When comparing a DIY plan or professional quote, look at the actual inclusions and any property-dependent or specialist items.

Core internal vacate cleaning

  • Kitchen surfaces and cabinetry
  • Oven and cooking area
  • Bathrooms and toilets
  • Laundry
  • Internal storage
  • Internal glass, sills and tracks
  • Skirtings and accessible surfaces
  • Vacuuming and hard-floor cleaning

Property-dependent items

  • Blinds and ceiling fans
  • Carpet steam cleaning
  • Garage or balcony
  • Exterior windows — often separately quoted
  • Upper-level / restricted-access glass
  • Additional wet areas
  • Heavy build-up requiring extra time

Often separate / specialist work

  • Repairs and repainting
  • Significant mould remediation
  • Pest treatment
  • Carpet repair
  • Exterior pressure washing
  • Garden restoration
  • Damage rectification by trades
Important: property managers may provide property-specific cleaning feedback, and rental obligations should not be reduced to a generic “agent requirement” column. Use your entry condition evidence, rental documents and official Victorian renting guidance where the issue is about responsibility rather than simply whether an area has been cleaned.

What ExitMaid brings to the final clean.

The old version of this page compared “agent requirements” against packages line by line. A better comparison is the actual booked scope, the property-specific work and what happens after the clean.

Useful evidence after the cleaners leave.

Eligible ExitMaid vacate cleans include our scope-limited cleaning guarantee: if reasonable cleaning items within the booked scope are raised, we can return to rectify eligible items under the guarantee terms.

A cleaning guarantee — not a guarantee of bond return.
Cleaning finished?

Now inspect what you're actually handing back.

The cleaning checklist ends when the clean is complete. Your next step is different: compare the property against its starting condition, document what remains and create your own pre-handover record before the keys go back.

Renter Pre-Handover Inspection ToolThis is intentionally separate from the cleaning checklist. It helps you inspect and document the property rather than clean it again.
